Wimbledon
It’s been a historic year at Wimbledon and we are getting to the end :(
After a LOT of upsets – including No. 1 ranked Iga Swiatek losing to Alize Cornet and breaking her 37-match winning streak and Serena Williams being knocked out in the first round – we are approaching the FINAL.
In the Semi-Final, Simona Halep of Romania faced Elena Rybakina in a game that odds-makers had Halep highly favored to win. In a shocking turn of events, Rybakina won 6-3, 6-3 to defeat Halep and make it to her first Grand Slam final.
The other semi-final was between Ons Jabeur of Tunisia and Tatjana Maria of Germany. Jabeur took the first round 6-2, but Maria came back to win the second set. In the end, it was Jabeur who came back to win the third set and secure her place in her first Wimbledon final.
She became the first African and the first woman of Arab descent to make a Grand Slam final. So the match is set - Jabeur and Rybakina will play for the title.
The final match of the tournament will happen Saturday at 9 a.m. ET on TSN, ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC.
CONCACAF - Canada vs. Panama
The CONCACAF Women’s Championship is going strong and Canada’s team is no different!
The Canadians dominated Trinidad and Tobago in their opener, finishing with an impressive score of 6-0. They will no doubt carry the same momentum heading into their second round-robin match against Panama.
And as a qualifying tournament for the 2023 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics, the stakes are high in Mexico’s University Stadium!
Panama is 0-1 so far, following a 3-0 loss to Costa Rica. And in terms of statistics, the team falls short compared to Canada — except when it comes to fouls committed (they are ranked No. 1) and yellow cards received (they are tied for first with Jamaica).
Canada is the top-ranked team in Group B, leading the section in goals, shots and assists since the start of the tournament. And five out of the top 10 goalscorers in the tournament so far are Canadian, including No. 2 Julia Grosso and No. 3 Christine Sinclair.
So, it’s not hard to have hope that the red and white will take control of this one!
You can watch the match live at 10 p.m. ET on OneSoccer or catch a delayed rebroadcast of the event on CBC-TV and the free CBC Gem service at 12:30 a.m. local time.
